Motivation and Leadership in Social Work Management

Motivation and leadership are very important components in social work management. Good managers should be aware not only of practical facets of that but also have a theoretical bases. That is why the work titled Motivation and Leadership in Social Work Management was written. The author of that composition is Elizabeth Fisher from Shippensburg Uniwersity in Pennsylvania. In that paper she is articulating some kinds of motivation or leadership theories and how they apply to social work. First part of the lecture is dealing about motivation theories which are divided on: content theories of motivation and process theories of motivation. Elizabeth Fisher described several theories of leadership which I will talk over in this section. I am going to begin from the McGregor s Theory X - Theory Y. He developed these ideas based on the assumption that manager s styles depend on what they believe motivates human behaviour. A social work manager that people are motivated by the concepts of Theory X or Theory Y, and then the manager s actions are in accordance. Theory X is telling that workers are averse to a job and they are naturally irresponsible. They are doing everything which is connecting in their own interest. The only way to get good achievements from them is to use coercive methods. Accordance to Theory Y work is natural for people and it is something that they want to do. Humans are generally more motivated by self-actualization need than reward or punishments. They have natural ability to be crative and productive. Another system was developed by Renis Likert. It is a model of understanding leadership and the performance characteristisc of organizations. It is called Likert s System 1 - System 4. Each system rep resents one of four types of organizations and depends of the performing scale. System 1 organizations are more inflexible and tradicional bureaucratic organizations. I Heard It On The News Essay To prepare ourselves for this unit in class, we read two plays; Find Me and Equus. We also read two poems; What Ever Happened To Lulu and I Heard It On The News.  To begin, we studied a wide variety of different newspaper articles and stories, because Find Me was originally written after Olwen Wymark saw a very brief and small newspaper story, and then investigated behind what the media and newspaper portrayed. The story we chose to develop was agreed on by the whole group, and found in the Daily Mail. The story chosen was about a mother that abandoned her six year old child at a train station, apparently drunk. This small news cutting inspired us to create a chilling explanation to why a mother would do such a thing. The story we had chosen, seemed to suddenly become nothing more than a guideline, as our eerie, and somewhat psychologically thrilling, tale began to develop and unfold before us. Every member of the group wrote a monologue for their character, to show the thoughts, feelings and emotions, we kept the monologues short and effective, with a chorus of Whats going on at the end, as in certain parts of the play there is a large amount of in-depth dialogue. We wanted the acting scenes to appear as natural and realistic as possible, despite the very strong connection with the supernatural and extraordinary within. The viewpoints varied as time went on, and characters started to question the odd goings on around them, and their sanity regarding such things. Much like in Equus , which proved very useful as a base for our own interpretations of our characters. We also used the idea of judgement. Much like in Equus, we used a psychiatrist as the main voice. Their sensationalised view of events was in contrast to the real sadness, and in many ways, ordinariness, of the characters and their lives.  In Equus, Alan is always portrayed as being guilty, but in Blood Brothers, there is a journey leading up to, but not past, the events. There is nothing afterwards, and this is the way we decided to go with our play. We wanted the audience to wonder what would happen next, so we ended the play at the train station, again, without going any further than the mother regaining some form of sanity, and because of our broken timeline, begs the question, what happened in between that, and seeing the psychiatrist (as shown in the beginning). Using an open ending and leaving the audience wondering allowed each member of the audience to have their own different opinions, thoughts and predictions as to what would happen, which could then spark discussion. We set our play primarily in the present day. We used the 2007 film Nuptials of the Dead, and 1999 film The sixth sense, as a stimulus for the characters.  The pressures on the twins in Blood Brothers are made worse by their difference in class. Linda cannot betray her class and marry Eddie, even though it would be better for her. In our play, the children, (dead and alive), seem to somehow compete for everything, even if unaware at the time. The living child (gfgfd) constantly craves the love of her mother, and tries to get it by imitating the previous child. Unknown to her this caused major upset in the family, and was the basis of many arguments, not only between the mother and daughter, but also between the parents. In our play, we also used the idea of a mental break, to explain some of the actions of the characters. There are elements of obsession, competition and depression in both the mother and daughter, but more so in the mother, constantly reminded of her previous grief, and ends up going mad through her obsession. This is very similar to Mickey, who always had the misfortunes and never gets the rewards. The telling of the stories in all the plays and in ours is a central theme. It is part of the modern mythology that stories are told, embellished and reported. The way in which the news is reported is sensationalised and exaggerated, but it is only when we conduct research and look behind the news that we really start to see the real story, along with the real circumstances, feelings, thoughts and emotions of the real people involved.

Wuthering heights 2 Essay Throughout the novel Wuthering Heights, Emily Bront effectively utilizes weather and setting as methods of conveying insight to the reader of the personal feeling of the characters. While staying at Thrushcross Grange, Mr. Lockwood made a visit to meet Mr. Heathcliff for a second time, and the horrible snow storm that he encounters is the first piece of evidence that he should have perceived about Heathcliffs personality. The setting of the moors is one that makes them a very special place for Catherine and Heathcliff, and they are thus very symbolic of their friendship and spirts. The weather and setting are very effective tools used throughout the end of the novel as well, for when the weather becomes nice it is not only symbolic of the changing times, and the changing people, but also a new beginning. During his stay at Thrushcross Grange Mr. Lockwood made the perilous journey to Wuthering Heights only a few times. On the occasion of his second visit, the snow began to drive thick ly(7) during his walk, and this horrible weather should have been foreshadowing to Lockwood about Heathcliffs, and the other members of the households true personalities. Upon arriving he was forced to bang continually upon the door before someone would take the care to let him in out of the cold. The dinner that Lockwood was permitted to have with the ‘family was anything but hospitable. Lockwood was treated not unlike an ignorant and unworthy guest, and hence the visit was in no way enjoyable for him. Upon desiring to leave the destitute home, Lockwood finds the weather too intolerable for him to even consider venturing out on his own, and upon being attacked by one of the dogs, he was pulled into the kitchen(15) and allowed, however ungraciously, to stay the night at Wuthering Heights. Once his walk home commenced the following day, Lockwood found himself being escorted by Heathcliff himself. The path that is used as a means of connection between the two houses does well to exemplify the feeling contained within each. The path that is nearest to the Heights is long and winding, with many pits, at least, were filled to a level; and entire ranges of mounds, the refuse of the quarries . . . blotted from the chart(28). This description is a disheartening one, and causes the reader to associate this kind of representation with the Heights. Upon reaching the pass between the Heights and the Grange, Heathcliff did not continue to direct Lockwoods travels. He stated that he could make no error there(28), for the path is transformed into one that is straight and easy for Lockwood to follow. These preliminary descriptions of the path between the two houses, and the weather upon first being introduced to the characters, help in conveying the personalities of the characters in a more subtle manner. The area surrounding both the Heights and the Grange are referred to as the moors, and they are an important setting for many characters throughout the course of the n ovel. The two characters that the moors are most symbolic of, however, are Heathcliff and Catherine Linton. The two would play on the moors as children, and this area of land was very expressive of their wild personalities, and of their friendship. The moors are thought of by them as a place where they could be free and unrestricted to be themselves. Bront once again utilizes a setting to represent the personalities of her characters, for here she uses the wildness of the moors to express the wildness of Heathcliff and Catherine. One evening Catherine makes the decision to marry Edgar Linton, and not her true love Heathcliff. Heathcliff hears her declaration and runs off into the moors. Not long after Heathcliff leaves the vicinity of the Grange, a storm came rattling over the Heights in full fury(78), and Catherine refuses to sleep without her love present in the Heights. Catherine would not be persuaded into tranquility.
